Vice President Leni Robredo on Sunday backed the call of Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio for the approval of the
Archipelagic Sealanes Passage Bill amid reported sightings of foreign vessels in Philippine waters.
The senator also recognized the need for a modernized Navy with the Philippines being an
archipelagic nation.
The Philippines and Indonesia, two of the largest
archipelagic states in the world, are parties to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, or Unclos, and are thus entitled to EEZs of 200 nautical miles.
"As a maritime and
archipelagic state located at the center of the world's marine biodiversity, the Philippines shall continue to contribute to the commission's unique role in fostering international cooperation in ocean science and in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, particularly Goal 14 on Life Below Water,"the DFA said.
The agreement delimits the overlapping EEZ of the two
archipelagic states specifically in the Mindanao Sea and the Celebes Sea in the southern Philippines and the Philippine Sea on the southern section of the Pacific Ocean.
