attack assessment

An evaluation of information to determine the potential or actual nature and objectives of an attack for the purpose of providing information for timely decisions. See also damage estimation.

The only purpose of NORAD's Integrated Tactical Warning and Attack Assessment (ITWAA) function was to confirm that an attack was in fact underway.
One of them was actually an attack assessment and the system behaved exactly the way we needed it to behave.
