At the exhibition, Japanese ceramics were praised for their diversity and finishes, Danish for their classical inspiration, and French for the newly mastered
barbotine technique.
Ancestors of these fish lamps can be found in the slipcast or '
barbotine' objects in naturalistic shapes made by the Massier family at the end of the 19th century when there were around 30 potteries in production.
