Ideally, for biologic assay, both the gas and particulate phase should be present; the components should be delivered to the biologic assay system in a manner that attempts to reflect the physicochemical composition of the exhaust in an ambient setting with consideration given to factors such as aging, transport, dilution, and potential influences from other factors (e.g., interactions with pollutants).
It remains to be seen whether a biologic assay or a mass assay that measures both active and inactive forms to total CK will provide thebest denominator in detecting when the concentration of CK-MB is elevated.
