Family Hyaenidae has four species belonging to three genera; spotted hyena Crocuta crocuta Erxleben, 1777,
brown hyena Hyaena brunnea Thunberg, 1820, striped hyena Hyaena hyaena Linnaeus, 1758 and aardwolf Proteles cristatus Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1824.
A wide variety of rare and common species exist like the nocturnal
brown hyena, cheetah, sable, giraffe, zebra, hippo and crocodile.
According to Dr Ingrid Wiesel, founder of the
Brown Hyena Research Project, the number of the endangered species seems to be stable at the moment.
The striped hyena is the second largest hyena species after the spotted hyena and is smaller in stature than the
brown hyena.
Of them, the striped hyena and the
brown hyena are most at risk.
There are different types of hyenas such as
brown hyena, striped hyena, spotted hyena or the laughing hyena.
Carol said an emergency call from a cattle rancher, who was losing a large number of calves to a rouge
brown hyena, resulted in "the experience of a lifetime for Ray and some hair-raising moments for Will".
Problem is, there's more than one hyena in the world, and I've tried four times now to get a
brown hyena. Dirk de Bod and I had one corning to bait two years ago; we could hear the birds and baboons.
It is just under 50,000 km and home to black rhino, gemsbok, HartmannOs zebra, giraffe, springbok,
brown hyena, and leopard.
