Probably quite an anachronism by the time this photograph was taken in or around 1911, the distinctive style of transport featured in this photograph, known as a 'bullboat', was once widely used by the Upper Missouri river tribes to cross rivers and navigate more shallow river-way tributaries.
Wilson was struck by the precision of her memory about the details of laying out a lodge, making a bullboat of hide and poles, diapering the infant Goodbird with cattail down and endless other skills.
