Housed within a giant concrete cylinder, the planetarium's dome was built with 44 "ribs" that tie 226 aluminum panels together to form the projection surface, according to the museum.<br />The building, which features 60 percent more public space than its predecessor, also houses galleries that address four main themes: "Life in the Universe," the "Tree of Life," "Web of Life" and "Imagining the Future."<br />A "Touch and See Lab" welcomes visitors to touch specimens ranging from small animal pelts to a life-size elephant skull, and a large cantilevered window overlooks an outdoor agricultural research space.<br />"There are hundreds of experiments going on right here," said George Weiblen, the museum's interim scientific director and curator of plants.
