The butterfly fish of the genus Chaetodon are some of the most distinctive and familiar of the Red Sea reef fishes, almost disc-shaped with a short to long and pointed snout and generally colored and patterned boldly in black and white and yellow.
These include species such as the Cortez Angelfish, Pomacanthus zonipectus (Pomacanthidae), and the Three Banded Butterflyfish, Chaetodon humeralis (Chaetodontidae), which have been observed (but not collected) within the La Jolla study area (Lea et al.
