This consists of a central kinocilium (or cnidocil) surrounded by an array of actin-rich stereovilli (Goltz and Thurm, 1991).
These include the cnidocil complex, the trigger that initiates the changes in membrane permeability that result in the firing of a nematocyst (for a review, see Anderson and Bouchard, 2009).
