High-grade CIN lesions identified
colposcopically and/or histologically are conventionally excised.
There were 8 Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) reported in the study group of which only two were
colposcopically found suspicious.
In 29 cases, which were
colposcopically reported as RCI 0-2, 1 case was histologically confirmed as LSIL/CIN1 (3.44%), 1 case as HSIL (3.44%) and 27 cases were negative for dysplasia (93.10%).
During the procedure, all
colposcopically abnormal findings were excised, aiming for a tissue depth of at least 6 mm.
Loop excision studies after colposcopy have identified women with CIN 2+ and cancer missed
colposcopically.

Reid's Colposcopic Index (RCI) is a systematic, objective method of
colposcopically grading the severity of premalignant cervical lesions and makes use of four colposcopic signs: lesion margin, color of acetowhitening, blood vessels, and iodine staining (Ferris & Greenberg, 1994).
Although Pap smear screening has a high specificity, only
colposcopically directed biopsies can confirm the exact grade of the lesion.
It is also possible that trauma to the cervical tissue from the insertion of the device "induces local small foci of chronic inflammation and a long-lasting immune response similar to that noted in patients after
colposcopically guided punch biopsies.
Until recently, few experts would have questioned the value of the partnership between cervical cytology screening and treatment of lesions detected on
colposcopically directed biopsy.
