cotton rose
n. A shrub or small tree (Hibiscus mutabilis) in the mallow family, native to China and widely cultivated as an ornamental, having showy flowers that change in color from white when they open to dark pink or red as they fade. Also called Confederate rose.
[From its general resemblance to the cotton plant and the particular resemblance of its flower buds to cotton bolls.]
