[Scots, raid on horseback, from Middle English rade, from Old English rād, a riding, road; see reidh- in Indo-European roots.]
raid′er n.
Word History: Raid and road both descend from the Old English word rād, which meant primarily "the act of riding" but could also be used specifically to describe an act of riding with hostile intent—that is, a raid. The ai in raid represents the standard development of the Old English vowel ā in Scots and the dialects of northern England, while the oa in road represents the standard development of Old English ā in the dialects of southern England. In the dialects of southern England, road retained its earlier senses of "journey on horseback" and "hostile foray" until the mid-1600s, when the modern sense "public way" became the most common meaning of the word. Later, Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) helped popularize the northern form of the word, raid, through his collections of Scots ballads and his other writings. In the meaning "a military expedition on horseback," raid became part of the general vocabulary of English outside of Scotland and northern England. A trace of the earlier meaning of road, "foray, raid," can still be detected in the compound inroad, literally "a riding or advance into."
An operation, usually small scale, involving a swift penetration of hostile territory to secure information, confuse the enemy, or to destroy installations. It ends with a planned withdrawal upon completion of the assigned mission.

ORBIS RESEARCH recently introduced New Research Report on Global Direct Attached Storage (DAS) System Market Insights, Forecast to 2025, this study also analyzes the market status, market share, growth rate, future trends, market drivers, opportunities and challenges, risks and entry barriers, sales channels, distributors and Porter's Five Forces Analysis.
Users can configure A16T2-Share as a Storage Area Network (SAN) storage pool when integrated with SAN software, or partition the storage array into several storage volumes and benefit from the high performance Thunderbolt ports as direct attached storage with immense capacity.
From fixed low cost storage solutions, customized data protection and centralized storage management solutions to Linux development engineering, Cutting Edge is an industry leader for iSCSI, IP SAN, Network Attached Storage (NAS) and Direct Attached Storage (DAS) products.
The company said that the solution, initially designed to provide access to Storage Area Network (SAN) or Network Attached Storage (NAS) infrastructure, now has the additional capability to provide access to Direct Attached Storage. The additional capability was provided by IceWEB as a direct response to requests from its customers.
"The unprecedented price point for this level of unified functionality makes it affordable for customers to undertake projects that were previously cost-prohibitive, such as moving from Direct Attached Storage (DAS) to consolidated IP storage (iSCSI SAN and NAS) and business continuity (WAN replication)," said Jeff Helthall, VP Sales RELDATA.
Storage and backup technologies, including Direct Attached Storage, Network Attached Storage and Storage Area Networks, and optical devices such as DVDs, CDs, and BluRay help support the archiving and retrieval process.
From the big picture lens, Farley views such issues as storage requirements beyond traditional client/server computing typologies and the high costs of direct attached storage. At the micro-level, he dissects disk drives, and subsystem and Small Computer Systems Interface (SCSI) architecture.
The ongoing threat made the implementation of a solid backup and storage management solution critical for the district, which until two years ago was relying on direct attached storage, or DAS (see "The Power of One," page 23).
The total cost of ownership for a SAN can be less than half of direct attached storage as shown in a report by McKinsey and Company and Merrill Lynch's Technology Research Group.
In the mainframe era of the past, storage devices were attached directly to the computers they served via a method known as direct attached storage (DAS).
"The market revenue of storage attached network (SAN) systems will exceed the combined value of network attached storage (NAS) and direct attached storage (DAS) shipments in 18 of the 20 [largest] vertical markets in the US by 2007, accounting for 65% of the market for external disk systems.
