The first general observation emerging from the structure-activity analysis is that the two alkamides showing the most antifungal activity (alk2b/3a, based on lowest MIC and most cell wall disruption) have an 11-carbon chain (undeca-), as opposed to the less active remaining alkamides that have a 12-carbon chain (dodeca-).
The latter in turn is digested by glucosidase II (G-II), a dual activity enzyme, which is able to cleave Glc residues linked to Glc (Glc[alpha]1 [right arrow] 3Glc) and Man (Glc[alpha]1 [right arrow] 3Man) residues and generate dodeca- ([Glc.sub.1][Man.sub.9]GlcN[Ac.sub.2]; G1M9) and undecasaccharide ([Man.sub.9]GlcN[Ac.sub.2]; M9), successively.
