Yet there was fierce resistence to the breathalyser, which was dubbed the "
drunkometer".
The first alcohol breath test, the
Drunkometer, was introduced in 1938 and was bigger than a shoebox.
He describes the first research on drunk driving in the 1930s, the influence of increased driving with the growth of the suburbs and highways in the 1950s and 1960s, the introduction of the
Drunkometer and Breathalyzer, activist groups like Students Against Drunk Driving and the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists, Ronald Reagan's creation of the Presidential Commission on Drunk Driving, continued scientific research, stories of drunk driving today, and problems preventing and punishing the behavior.
For the record, it was invented by a Dr R Hargen, who called it the
Drunkometer.
