Astronomers are puzzled by the so-called "dwarf galaxy problem" (also known as the missing satellites problem), arising from simulations predicting the evolution of the distribution of matter in the universe.
In 1994 they first observed the strung-out stars of the disintegrating Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. Then, a few years later, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) began mapping very faint stars all across the northern hemisphere sky.
Washington, August 15 ( ANI ): NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory has found a massive cloud of multimillion-degree gas in a galaxy about 60 million light-years from Earth, which is likely from a collision between a dwarf galaxy and a much larger galaxy called NGC 1232.
Washington, Apr 4 ( ANI ): Despite being a small, or so-called dwarf galaxy, the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is so bright that it is visible to the unaided eye from the Southern Hemisphere and near the equator.
When Yashar Hezaveh (Stanford University) and others employed the Blue Waters supercomputer to analyze the ALMA ring, they found a dwarf galaxy hidden within the depths of the background galaxy's distorted image.
