Odontogenic cysts and tumours are lesions arising from the odontogenic apparatus, from the odontogenic epithelium and/or ectomesenchyme with varying degrees of inductive tissue interaction.
The embryonic development of submandibular salivary glands of mouse begins at embryonic day 11 (E 11).9 The oral epithelium is separated by the underlying neural crest cell-derived mesenchyme (ectomesenchyme) by a sheet of extracellular matrix.10 It is reported that development and maintenance of salivary glands is dependent upon reciprocal coordination between epithelium and mesenchymal interactions.11
Given that bone anlagen derives from different germ layers [23], it is proposed that these progenitors have more than one developmental origin, including mesoderm [23] and ectomesenchyme of the neural crest [24].
Odontogenic tumors similar to normal odontogenesis present various inductive interactions between the odontogenic epithelium and odontogenic ectomesenchyme. (Neville, 2005)
