The carbonyl content change could be explained by the early research on chemical changes of thermal-treated wood by Tjeerdsma and Militz (2005): when wood samples were exposed in an environment with high temperature and humidity, acetic acid was generated from the hydrolysis of ethanoyl within polysaccharide molecular chains of hemicellulose, and the content of carbonyl was decreased.
