But trials to re-mobilise dunes at Newborough Warren on Anglesey and other locations are already beginning to show signs of success, with the critically endangered
fen orchid and many other species making a comeback.
But conservation groups including the RSPB, Buglife, Plantlife and Butterfly Conservation warned there needed to be more focus in the plans on saving individual species ranging from the
fen orchid to the cuckoo.
It contains the UK's entire population of the
fen orchid and includes the clear waters of Kenfig Pool which, at 70 acres, is the largest natural lake in South Wales.
However, a walk in the dunes at Kenfig National Nature Reserve, near Bridgend, could bring you into contact with one of the more threatened plants in north-west Europe, the
fen orchid. It's not just these that flower here - in the summer you can spot the exotic blooms across Wales.
And as for plants the small white orchid and
fen orchid are each only found at four locations.
