This requires some weed identification since weeds may have taproots (roots that grow straight down into the soil), rhizomes (roots that travel under the surface of the soil), stolons (roots that travel on top of the soil) or
fibrous root systems.
A PRIVET has a very hungry,
fibrous root system so it takes all the moisture and nutrients, making nearby plants struggle.
Experts in the agricultural field suggest that crops with the tap roots must be followed by those with
fibrous root system, as it will help in uniform use of nutrients in the soil.
In a moist, temperate climate such as ours willow grows quite easily, it has a tough
fibrous root allowing it to sprout nearly from a cutting.
A target of miR408a is the gene LOB37, the product of which is a LOB domain protein; such proteins are known to be required for adventitious or
fibrous root formation (Liu et al., 2005; Xu et al., 2016).
Plants with a
fibrous root system like hardy geranium and Astilbe will break apart into plantlets quite easily.
An ideal green manure crops should possess the following traits: it should be of short duration show and high seedling vigour; should have
fibrous root system; ability to produce high green bio-mass and N in 5-6 weeks; site specific i.e.
Subsequently plant development at 60, 90, and 120 DAS was recorded by obtaining data on number of leaves, total leaf area (using Leaf Area Meter 3100, USA),
fibrous root length (using root image analyzer, Epson 1680, USA), and leaf area index (LAI).
The airing of the roots ensures a more
fibrous root structure with more root tips for a healthier overall plant that grows quickly.
Needle nematodes, discovered at high levels in the sandy soils of Illinois and Georgia, caused visible stunting of lateral roots and destruction of the
fibrous root system.
Most plant species can be categorized as having either a taproot or
fibrous root system, although many species may have a combination of both root system types (Figure 6-8).
