In the only comprehensive taxonomic revision of the genus Cebus (currently divided into the genera Sapajus and Cebus), Hershkovitz (1949) considered that the Cebus aequatorialis of Allen (1914) actually represents a subspecies of Cebus albifrons, considered as C.
The genus Cebus currently has eight species, which were previously considered subspecies.
Both types are observed within the genus Cebus. In Cebus capucinus, females mate with several males in the group, and social groups are periodically invaded (every three to four years, on average; Fedigan, 2003) by two or three adult males that usually evict former resident males and may fatally wound dependent infants (Fedigan, 2003; Fedigan and Jack, 2004).
