An en-route hold or clearance beyond the
holding fix is supposed to be issued at least five minutes before reaching it.
Unless cleared differently, go direct to the
holding fix using the GPS.
The navigator shows the entry on the moving map for when you cross the
holding fix. The utility also exists in Garmin's G1000.
The AC directed a "go-around" and proceeded to the NAV established GINS

We checked in with Meridian Approach Control and were sent to a
holding fix, with no expected clearance time--just hold as published.
The controller actually thanked me for the "idea" (also the pronounciation of the

Timed approaches from a
holding fix also omit the PT.
Capt Wright was unable to see the runway environment at decision height and executed a go-around and began to climb to the
holding fix. As the pilot climbed, the SOF advised to continue the climb to 45,000 ft to save fuel.
The airplane's single-engine performance wasn't that good on a cold day, and I was using almost all available power from the left engine as we motored back to the
holding fix. The instructor wanted another lap, so I rolled into a standard-rate right turn as we crossed the fix.
Procedure turns on approaches (holds-in-lieu and teardrops) are mandatory unless one of the conditions in [section]91.175(j) applies--vectors to final, cleared straight-in from a fix, on a NoPT route, or a timed approach from a
holding fix.

holding fix, and the crew began a slow climb to 11,000 ft MSL.
It's far less common to extend this concept backward from the FAF through the terminal area to the en route environment, and forward from the MAP through the missed approach to the
holding fix.
