In Malta itself, the Hal Saflieni
Hypogeum is considered one of the most important prehistoric monuments in the world and dates from around 3600 to 2400 BC.
To dig deeper into the past, head underground at the
Hypogeum to discover a Neolithic burial chamber that dates back 6,000 years.

Furthermore, the island is also home to the Hal Saflieni
Hypogeum, the only known prehistoric underground temple in the world.

Hypogeum, a 6,000-year-old subterranean structure, and the Tarxien Temples.
The
Hypogeum site in Malta, a temple discovered by accident in 1902, only allows 60 visitors per day and is a clear example of where the government is forgoing substantial revenue in order to protect the site.

They watched them running and shrieking and chasing each other and hiding behind the columns of the huge porticoed
hypogeum which led into the grotto with the stalactites, under the domes where everything echoed like in an empty room.
At the same time, Heritage Malta commenced preparations for the 3D modeling, using laser scanning technology of three other sites, namely, Ta' Hagrat, Skorba, and the interior of the
Hypogeum. In a project promoted and implemented jointly by the Department of Archaeology of the University of Cambridge (UK) and the National Museum of Archaeology (Heritage Malta), funded by the Templeton Foundation, emphasis was placed on the digitisation of archaeological artefacts and sites related to Maltese prehistoric figurative art.
