It can also cause electrolyte disturbances in children, including
hypomagnesaemia, hypokalemia, and hypocalcaemia (CureSearch et al., 2008; Mayo Clinic, 2008).
High Na loading may have beneficial effects in reducing the K content of the soil, which may reduce metabolic disorders such as hypocalcaemia and
hypomagnesaemia. High Na loading may compete with K for soil exchange sites and plant uptake.
Risk factors for drug-induced TdP include: female sex, hypokalemia, recent conversion from atrial fibrillation, congestive heart failure, baseline QT prolongation, severe
hypomagnesaemia, and others (1, 2).
Such disturbances may include hypophosphataemia, hypokalaemia,
hypomagnesaemia, vitamin deficiencies, fluid or glucose intolerance or both, and resulting, potentially fatal, complications (11-13).
Severe magnesium deficiency, or
hypomagnesaemia, can block the release of parathyroid hormone (PTH).
The mineral element content of spring pasture in relation to the occurrence of grass tetany and
hypomagnesaemia in dairy cows.
Conclusion: Mean magnesium levels in patients with diabetic retinopathy were significantly lower than the magnesium levels that were taken as the reference suggesting a possible role of
hypomagnesaemia in increasing the risk of retinopathy amongst patients with diabetes.
Various different mechanisms has been mentioned for cisplatin induced cardiomyopathy and thrombo-embolism, some of which are endovascular injury with intimal fibrosis, decreased activation of protein C,
hypomagnesaemia and myocardial fiber apoptosis.11
Hypocalcaemia was defined as total serum calcium less than 7 mg/dL and
hypomagnesaemia as serum magnesium level of less than 1.7 mg/dL.
magnesium supplementation reduces plasma glucose levels, and improves the glycemic status of adults with prediabetes and
hypomagnesaemia [low magnesium]." (25)
Hypomagnesaemia may lead to neuromuscular excitability resulting in muscle cramp and uterine hyperactivity7.
