In 1615, he would also vie against a further colleague of his, the theologian Johannes Maccovius (1588-1644), over what became known as the causa particularis Frisica, a controversy between supra- and
infralapsarianism. (118) As van der Woude writes in Lubbert's biography: In all these years, we was engaged in fights on all sides.
For although his views were more strictly patterned than Calvin's, and more indicative of the direction of later supralapsarianism, Beze did not argue an "order of the decree" in the manner of later supra- and
infralapsarianism. Supralapsarianism as such is more a development of orthodox writers such as Amandus Planus, Francis Junius, Bartholomaus Keckermann, Johannes Scharpius, Lucas Trelcatius, Antonius Walaeus, Johannes Maccovius, and Franciscus Gomarus (the chief opponent of James Arminius), their teaching paralleling William Perkin's in England.
My one critique is that I find unconvincing M.'s interior connections between
infralapsarianism and common grace; I would argue that common grace doctrines may be pursued by those who have abandoned the speculation inherent in that question.
Beeke's essay, perhaps the most interesting of this set, looks at the declining importance of the Genevan Academy, blaming the quagmire of "supralapsarianism" versus "
infralapsarianism" theology (using useful primary resources).
