and Clinostomum complanatum (
metacercaria) occurred only in females.
Data on prevalence and species of
metacercaria in fish were obtained from Chi et al.
The cyst is oval, with a fine and transparent wall, bearing
metacercaria , body brown in color, 0.174-0.215 x 0.147-0.215, covered with spines.
The parasite that occurred in the greatest number of hosts (84%) and with the greatest abundance (147.84 [+ or -] 170.37, range = 0-596) was the neascus
metacercaria of the trematode Posthodiplostomum minimum.
In examination of
metacercaria fauna in crustacean, specially Uca rapax (Smith) in the localities of La Sabana, La Ceiba and El Paujil of the Cajigal district in Sucre State, Venezuela, during 1997-1999, 36 of the 94 crabs, U.
(
metacercaria), 88612; Distoichometra bufonis, 88614; Oswaldocruzia pipiens, 88615; Rhabdias ranae, 88609; Physaloptera sp.
However, in the Beagle Channel mussel populations, a
metacercaria parasitizing the foot and byssus gland was found, which was absent in the specimens here studied; conversely, turbellarians and copepods were absent in the Beagle Channel population (Cremonte et al., 2011), but were present in the specimens here studied.
The prevalence of infection was 12.1%, and the intensity of infection did not exceed 1
metacercaria per mussel.
The cercariae penetrate under the scales of a susceptible fish, which serves as the second intermediate host; they encyst as
metacercaria, mainly in the fish body muscles.
Two species of Ophiotaenia (one maturing in turtles, one in water snakes) and the
metacercaria of Cephalogonimus vesicaudus (maturing in turtles) were found in tadpoles but not in adult frogs.
