Although lung flukes prefer to encyst in the pleura or lungs, infective metacercariae may migrate to extra-pulmonary sites and cause granulomatous nodule formation, most commonly in the brain (cerebral paragonimiasis [Case 8]) or under the skin (trematodal larval migrans [Cases 7, 12, 13, 14]).
The cercariae are free swimming and mature into metacercariae, encysted larval trematodes lacking a tail, after entering their second intermediate host, D.
Voucher helminths from the 2004-2007 collection were deposited in the United States National Parasite Collection, USNPC, Beltsville, Maryland: Distoichometra bufonis (USNPC 100930); Glypthelmins quieta (USNPC 100931); Gorgoderina multilobata (USNPC 100932); Haematoloechus kernensis (USNPC 100933); Megalodiscus microphagus (USNPC 100934); Digenean metacercariae (USNPC 100938); Cosmocerca variabilis (USNPC 100935); Rhabdias ranae (USNPC 100936); Acanthocephalan cystacanth (USNPC 100937).
The second intermediate hosts, in which metacercariae form, are the same molluscs or frog tadpoles (Key ..., 1978).
Infection occurs by ingestion of plants with metacercariae attached to them.
Digeneans, which mature in the digestive tract of marine fish, are usually acquired through the consumption of invertebrates (crustaceans, molluscs, polychaetes, and echinoderms, among other taxa) which harbor encysted metacercariae (Rohde, 2005).
A subsample of specimens was examined by dissection for the presence of parasite metacercariae, including Ribeiroia.

A total of 40 mummichogs (Fundulus heteroclitus) from 3 localities in the Massachusetts area and 9 mummichogs from Georgetown, South Carolina were examined for the presence of Ascocotyle metacercariae. All metacercariae were located in the bulbus arteriosus of the heart.
