The 2000 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), estimates that more than 16.7 million people have abused inhalants at least once in their lifetime, 6.4 million people have used Ecstasy (methylene dioxymethamphetamine) at least once, and 4,000,000 have abused OxyContin (oxycodone) at least once.
Among the few significant changes between 1998 and 1999 were increases in use of methylene dioxymethamphetamine (ecstasy) by 10th and 12th graders and steroids by 8th and 10th graders, and decreases in crack cocaine use by 8th and 10th graders and daily use of alcohol by seniors.
