In all patients, IHC analysis for VSBV-1 antigen showed areas of widespread
neuropil, cytoplasmic, and nuclear staining (Figure 3, panel A).
Areas with
neuropil like material noted and foci of necrosis also seen.
The slow [K.sup.+] dependent responses were restricted to the
neuropil, further supporting their involvement in synaptic signaling (Yarowsky and Carpenter, 1978b).
The central area of a ganglion consists of
neuropil, a tangle of neuronal fibers (Fig.
Histologically, there was
neuropil edema and hemorrhage in the white matter scattered in several areas of the telencephalon (Figure 1C) and near the hemorrhagic areas foci of malacia, reactive astrocytes and some inflammatory cells were observed (Figure 1C).
The neuroectodermal cells were polygonal to spindle shaped, haphazardly arranged in short palisading bundles, streams, or disorganized poorly delineated aggregates, separated by a finely fibrillar, tangled, pale eosinophilic matrix reminiscent of
neuropil. These cells had indistinct cell borders, a small-to-moderate amount of eosinophilic cytoplasm, a round-to-oval nucleus with vesicular-to-coarsely stippled chromatin, and 1-3 inconspicuous-to-large nucleoli.
Part of the apparent change in cellularity is due to age-related changes in the size and shape of ganglion cells and the amount of intervening
neuropil. Even if the number of ganglion cells per ganglion remains stable with age, individual ganglion cell somata enlarge, (21-23) which can influence the number of cytoplasmic profiles likely to be transected in a section of given thickness.
Tumors, such as pineal parenchymal tumors, craniopharyngiomas, and hemangioblastomas, as well as ependymomas of the spinal cord, often incite reactive gliosis and Rosenthal fiber formation in the adjacent
neuropil, sometimes leading to the misrecognition of the tumor as PA.
Kerlinsky: I agree with you about using certain adjunctive pharmacotherapies for acute psychosis, which is associated with neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and
neuropil and myelin damage.
A critical innovation is that knowledge is to be distinguished from mere information partly by the "condensed state of the global cortical
neuropil".
A: Low-power histology of the mass (hematoxylin and eosin stain, original magnification x4) shows a nodular proliferation of small neuroblasts in a background of fibrillary
neuropil. B: High-power histology of the mass (hematoxylin and eosin stain, original magnification x.20) shows small neuroblasts in a background of fibrillary
neuropil.
