Images of the remittance documents are captured by scanners, and much of the processing is done automatically utilizing OCR (optical character reading), ICR (intelligent character reading), OMR (optical mark reading) and CAR/ LAR (courtesy amount recognition/legal amount recognition)--minimizing the need for human intervention and, hence, the opportunity for human error.
Another important form of scanning is optical mark reading (OMR), sometimes called mark sense reading.
Glabus says they had heard of optical mark reading being used successfully for similar, though not as extensive, studies by other dioceses and archdioceses, so they felt comfortable with the technology.
