Sean stressed: "Avoid the temptation to
overgraze. If the sward is grazed below 4cm it will deplete the plant energy stores and slow down recovery when the rain comes.
It is hoped they will help balance rural ecosystems by curbing the huge numbers of wild deer which currently
overgraze on land.
When cattle
overgraze on grass, they create perfect conditions for thorn bushes to shoot up.
Ranchers had allowed livestock to
overgraze. Without grasses or trees to hold in moisture, the soil was dry.
Plus, farmers sometimes cut down forests to plant crops, or they allow livestock to
overgraze grasslands.
Keep animals off wet pastures, where they
overgraze, trample grass, compact soil and create mud.
It also found farmers are allowing their sheep to
overgraze lands to get extra EU payments.
That pattern suggests that the numbers plunge because the lemmings
overgraze the moss.
If hungry otters don't keep urchin populations in check, the urchins
overgraze the kelp--creating a barren wasteland on the seafloor.
"You've got to make sure mustangs don't
overgraze, or eat the plants down so much they can't regrow," Shane says.
