Top Tip: To secure the spindles, you can hammer a panel pin through the spacers to hold them in place.
The most commonly used nails for fixing are panel pin nails or oval nails.
Using a panel pin hammer, gently tap the small nails (these should be included in your draught excluder kit) to fix the strip to the frame.
For example, when fitting beading using panel pins, the flat side of the hammer knocks the small panel pin nail into place, then the bell face drives it home.
A panel pin every 300mm will do, nailing across the mitre will help close the mitre but any gaps can be filled using decorator's caulk.
To make the mantelpiece look more solid, glue and panel pin a strip of moulding along the front.
