Predictive value of age & serum
parathormone and vitamin D3 levels for post-operative hypocalcaemia after total thyroidectomyfor non-toxic multinodular goitre.
The retrospective nature of the study, the diagnosis of AVN in physical therapy and rehabilitation or orthopedics clinics of different centers, and some patients having their follow-ups irregularly prevented obtaining pre-diagnosis vitamin D, serum calcium, and
parathormone concentrations.
Hyperparathyroidism (HPT) is a frequent endocrine disorder that progress with an increase in the
parathormone (PTH) synthesis and secretion from the chief cells in one or more glands.
Serum levels of calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, and plasma
parathormone and 25-hydroxy vitamin [D.sub.3] were normal as well.
In laboratory analyses, serum calcium (Ca, 9.0-10.2 mg/ dL), phosphorus (P 2.0-6.6 mg/dL), magnesium (Mg, 0.7-0.96 mg/dL), alkaline phosphatase (ALP 42-3823 u/L),
parathormone (PTH; 19.2-119.4 pg/mL), and 25-hydroxy (OH) vitamin D levels (11.8-79.2 ng/mL) were noted.
Primary hyperparathyroidism is accompanied by oversecretion of
parathormone, leading to hypercalcemia and hypophosphatemia.
In addition, the patients with positive airway pressure therapy were also excluded, as well as the candidates with a medication history that might affect bone metabolism, such as calcium, VD, bisphosphonates, corticosteroid,
parathormone, calcitonin, antiepileptics, Vitamin K antagonist, and heparin.
In the study, which was conducted with patients at a dialysis centre regarding the presence, frequency, and severity of the symptoms, the most common complaints of the patients were fatigue, sleep problems, pruritus, skin dryness, drowsiness, and bone pain.25 These complaints resulted from the imbalance in the laboratory findings, such as phosphorus, sodium, and
parathormone, which increase the risk level of the patients.
Data included demographics, localization studies (the ultrasound was performed by a single experienced sonographer), histopathology report, intraoperative findings, type of anesthesia, ICU admission, pre- and postoperative
parathormone (PTH) and calcium ([Ca.sup.+2]) results.
BMD was measured, and serum anti-tissue transglutaminase IgA, ferritin, folate, vitamin B12, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, vitamin [K.sub.2], calcium, phosphate, alkaline phosphatase, and
parathormone were assayed in all patients with celiac disease.
