It is 16 % allotriomorphic ferrite (with Widmanstatten plates) along prior austenite boundaries, and the remainder is Widmanstatten ferrite (finer plates), with ~40 % of what appears to be pearlite. In the associated HAZ, areas show coarse- and fine-grained zones.
* The premature fracture in the tensile test was accompanied by a change in fracture mode in the pearlite matrix from ductile tearing to transgranular cleavage.
The resulting microstructure was a mixture of martensite and bainite with small amounts of pearlite and retained austenite and exhibited no appreciable effects of deformation.
Normalization (obtained structure pearlite + ferrite) thought gives similar impact toughness indices as the tempering, but increases the resistance to crack propagation.
