The two main European oak species used for barrels are Quercus robur, also known as
pedunculate oak, and Quercus petraea, also known as sessile oak.
Decline of
pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) was observed synchronously in a number of sites (Helama et al., 2009, 2014; Sohar et al., 2014a), this event thus contributing to the wider episode of dying back in this region, southern Finland, where the remaining stands represent the northern distributional limit of Quercus worldwide (Axelrod, 1983; Ducousso & Bordacs, 2004).

Under such conditions, sessile oak grows either in pure or mixed stands along with other broadleaved tree species such as European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.), sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus L.), common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.), linden (Tilia sp.) or other Quercus species such as
pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.), Hungarian oak (Quercus frainetto L.) or Turkey oak (Quercus cerris L.) (Haralamb, 1967; Stanescu et al., 1997; Sofletea and Curtu, 2007).
Comparative study of genetic variation and differentiation of two
pedunculate oak (Quercus robur) stands using microsatellite and allozyme loci.
A few other native broadleaved species, such as ash, silver birch and
pedunculate oak, will also be planted for diversity.
The pulsation coefficients of diameter growth of
pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) are: [[omega].sub.pd] = 0.0729927, of crown expansion uD = 0.1824817, and of height growth [[omega].sub.ph = 0.1459854.
The Welsh logo differs slightly from the English party's emblem, the foliage appears thicker and taller, representative of the differences between the sessile oak and the
pedunculate oak, which grows in eastern parts of Britain.
