In the area of Cold War studies, Smith's call (2000) for a
pericentric framework for the study of the Cold War goes in this direction.
Additionally, in comparison to Paraplangia and Orophus with an ancestral acrocentric X chromosome,
pericentric inversions modified the position of the centromere and changed the morphology of the X chromosome from acrocentric to bi-armed in A.
Apparently, the [M.sup.t] chromosome characterized by the presence of heterochromatn blocks in pericentromeric telomeric region in 1 of the arms evolved from a rare case of
pericentric inversion that consttutes a synapomorphy in F.
This rearrangement was preceded or followed by
pericentric inversions, in a way that keep both chromosome arms of each chromosome of similar sizes.
The donor chromosome of 1q showed breakpoints in the
pericentric region of 1q11, q12, and q21 except for one case with the breakpoint at 1q31q32.
A full-thickness placental biopsy specimen was obtained from a healthy
pericentric area, and fixed in 10% neutral buffered formal saline for 24 hours.
These marks are also required for the maturation of chromatin, as demonstrated for
pericentric heterochromatin (Annunziato and Seale 1983; Ekwall et al.
Most of this karyotypic variation has been attributed to
pericentric inversions and centric fusions, evidenced by comparative GTG- and CBG-banding, location of telomeres by in situ hybridization, and chromosome painting.
(a) The G-banded metaphase cell demonstrates abnormalities involving chromosomes 2 and 22 (black arrows), interpreted to represent an initial chromosome 2
pericentric inversion that disrupts the ALK gene at band 2p23 and translocates the centromeric portion of the gene to band 2q22.
