Endocardial cushion tissue and ventricular myocardium were quantified by point count planimetry and Cavalieri's method [see details in (Mandarim-de-Lacerda & del Sol)].
Wound area was calculated using computerized planimetry scanned images (DSC-W610[R], Sony, Tokyo, Japan) and Image-Pro Plus 4.5[R] (Media Cybernetics, Silver Spring, MD, USA), previously calibrated.
Although this estimation method is straightforward, validating it is difficult because the craniectomy base cannot be precisely defined to facilitate computer-assisted planimetry.
Infarct volume ([mm.sup.3]) was calculated as 2 mm (thickness of the slice) x sum of the infarction area ([mm.sup.2]) in all slices using computerized planimetry (PC-based image tool software).
