[Dutch : probably Dutch pompel-, thick, swollen (as in pompelbeen, swollen legs, elephantiasis, and pompelbloem, water lily) or Dutch pompoen, gourd, pumpkin (from Old French pompon, a kind of pumpkin or melon, from Old Italian popone, from Latin pepō, pepōn-; see pepo) + alteration of Portuguese limões, pl. of limão, lemon (from Arabic laymūn; see lemon).]
