Twenty years ago on the first Sunday in May, The Legion of Mary started celebrating the religious occasion of Mary Queen of the May. The procession used to start and finish in the Sacred Heart Church in Middlesbrough along Linthorpe Road.
After there was a May procession through the school grounds, led by Queen of the May Hannah Swarbrick and her consort, Flynn Bradley Davies, both aged eight.
Its refrain goes, "O Mary, we crown thee with blossoms today, Queen of the Angels, Queen of the May." Today boys and girls more often share the honor of placing the crown, sometimes with the First Communion class as an honor guard.
