The presence of quartz, calcite, fluorite, pentlandite and ralstonite are the principal chemical species found in the brick.
The XRD results showed that the main mineralogical species found in the brick are quartz, calcite, fluorite, pentlandite, and ralstonite. The EPR analysis showed that it was burned at temperatures lower than 400[degrees]C.
Associated minerals are: quartz, orthoclase, albite, aegirine, kupletskite, elpidite, lorenzenite, pyrochlore, monazite-(Ce), gagarinite-(Y), ralstonite, gearksutite and molybdenite.
Minerals in the pegmatite are: quartz, microcline, muscovite, albite, amblygonite, "apatite," beryl, uraninite, elbaite, members of the tantalite group, secondary uranium minerals, triphylite, triplite, purpurite, rockbridgeite, tavorite, barbosalite, hureaulite, eosphorite, phosphosiderite, carlhintzeite, colquirite, pachnolite, ralstonite and fluellite.
Associated minerals are: cryolite, cryolithionite, pachnolite, weberite, thomsenolite, prosopite, ralstonite, and fluorite.
Minerals identified in the pipe are: cryolite, cryolithionite, elpasolite, pachnolite, prosopite, ralstonite, thomsenolite, weberite and a new mineral with the composition [Na.sub.2]LiAI[F.sub.6] that has been named simmonsite.
The Zapot pegmatite represents the third known occurrence of the alumino-fluoride minerals cryolite, elpasolite, pachnolite, prosopite, and ralstonite in North America.
Still more exotic species are found: brizziite, rosenbergite, elpasolite and ralstonite. The second namesake mineral [ILLUSTRATION FOR FIGURE 8 OMITTED] is peretaite, another antimony mineral but a hydroxide/sulfate.
The pocket contained many well-formed microcrystals of chiolite, elpasolite, thomsenolite, pachnolite and ralstonite.
Bill Baltzley of the Powhatan Mining Company (Route 5, box 6065, Amelia, VA 23002) reports that additional pods of rare fluoride minerals (pachnolite, chiolite, elpasoite, cryolite, thomsenolite, ralstonite) have been found during 1993 at the Morefield pegmatite, near Amelia.
