The differential diagnosis of cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) may include several possible entities, which must consider the stage of a lesion's development and the possible co-existence with associated entities like diffuse osteomyelitis or simple bone cyst. The differential diagnosis of fibrous dysplasia includes lesions like Paget's disease, Non ossifying fibroma, Simple bone cyst, Enchondroma, Adamantinoma, Aneurysmal bone cyst, Osteofibrous dysplasia, Diffuse sclerosing osteomyelitis and Giant cell tumour.
Although a variety of terms are used to describe the lesion, such as simple bone cyst, traumatic bone cyst, hemorrhagic bone cyst, idiopathic bone cavity, and bone cyst unicameral (Kyoung & Kwang, 2013; Pushpanshu et al., 2013; Teoh, Watts, Chee, Reid, & Porter, 2010), the World Health Organization recommends SBC (Barnes et al., 2005).
In the Chinese JST database, the most common histologic type of bone tumor was conventional osteosarcoma, accounting for 22.8% of all bone tumors (2097 of 9200), followed by giant cell tumor (16.7%; 1536 of 9200), osteochondroma (9.1%; 837 of 9200), primary chondrosarcoma (5.6%; 517 of 9200), simple bone cyst (4.9%; 446 of 9200), fibrous dysplasia (4.2%; 383 of 9200), chondroblastoma (3.1%; 283 of 9200), osteoid osteoma (2.6%; 243 of 9200), malignant fibrous histiocytoma (2.2%; 201 of 9200), plasma cell myeloma (2.1%, 192 of 9200), enchondroma (2.0%, 188 of 9200), Ewing sarcoma (1.9%; 173 of 9200), chordoma (1.8%; 165 of 9200), and others (21.1%; 1939 of 9200).

Differential diagnoses of IOG cysts include: aneurysmal bone cyst, osteoblastoma, giant cell tumour, fibrous dysplasia, chondromyxoid fibroma, osteiod osteoma, rheumatoid arthritis, simple bone cyst, enchondroma, chondroblastoma, and subchondaral bone cyst.
Differential diagnosis includes expansile lytic lesions of bone, such as aneurysmal bone cyst, simple bone cyst, enchondroma and fibrous dysplasia, as well as giant cell tumour if the lesion is situated in the epiphysis.
Pathological types of tumors: nine cases of aneurysmal bone cyst, 11 cases of simple bone cyst, eight cases of bone fibrous dysplasia, nine cases of enchondroma, three cases of non-ossifying fibroma and two cases of eosinophilic granuloma.
