Although trauma to structures of the lateral wall is one of the most commonly reported types of insertional damage, buckling or kinking of the electrode in the basal turn, resulting in basal fracture of the osseous
spiral lamina, is another commonly reported mechanism of trauma with flexible lateral wall electrodes.
In P0-P14 mouse cochleae, IBA1+ cells were mainly observed in the modiolus,
spiral lamina, spiral ganglion, spiral ligament, and the organ of Corti (Figure 1).
This site of activation is assumed to be the cell bodies of spiral ganglion neurons or, in some cases, surviving peripheral nerve fibers within the osseous
spiral lamina. We also presume that the site of functional neural activation partly depends on the duration of deafness and probably shifts gradually from peripheral dendrites in recently deaf subjects or those with residual hearing to the spiral ganglion cell bodies in subjects with the longest history of deafness.
