The final structure that can be used to age many gastropod species is the
statolith.
Statoliths are small (<0.5 mm) paired calcium carbonate structures found within the nervous system (Fig.
gigas into northern and southern populations on the basis of genetic structure (Sandoval-Castellanos et al., 2007) or elemental signatures in the
statolith (Liu et al., 2015b).
Applications and future potential on
statolith increments analysis in squids and sepioids.
Lobsters, he knew, had an organ called the
statolith with tiny sensitive hairs on its surface.
But my colleagues and I wanted to see if we could infer the giant squid's habitat depth by studying its
statolith (STAH-toh-lith).
The
Statolith theory has been used to describe how plants perceive gravity.
Statolith microstructure and maximum age of Loligo gahi (Myopsida:Loliginidae) on the patagonian shelf.
Researchers have come to know this by examining a small growth (
statolith) in the animal's inner ear, which can be measured like the rings of a tree.
Resolution of growth increments within the
statolith micro-structure varies in different parts of
statoliths and in different populations and species of coleoid cephalopods.
Tentacular plane slices focused above the
statolith and close to the coverslip show a pair of bristle groups side by side, apparently over two groups of lamellate bodies seen end on (Fig.
A strict age validation for ommasterphid squids with the use of
statolith and beak measurements has been performed and the results of those experiments indicate that the beak is a reliable material for age estimation (Hu et al., 2015; Liu et al., 2015).
There are two conflicting models that attempt to explain the method of gravity perception in plants: the
statolith theory and the gravitational pressure theory.
