The space between the cell membrane of an axon terminal and that of a neighboring cell with which it forms a synapse, across which a nerve impulse is transmitted. Also called synaptic gap.

Electrical events called "action potentials" cause the neuron to release a chemical neurotransmitter into a small space, called the synaptic cleft, between it and a neighboring (postsynaptic) neuron.
