A variety of winter flowering plants are blooming at the riverside park from late December through January, and these include Petunia, Salvia farinacea,
Wax begonia, and Mexican marigold, according to the HEO.
Flowers evaluated were: French marigold, Tagetes patula (Asteraceae); windflower, Gaillardia aristata (Asteraceae), impatiens, Impatiens walleriana (Balsaminaceae);
wax begonia, Begonia semperflorens (Begoniaceae); and scarlet salvia, Salvia splendens (Lamiaceae).
However, it is the fibrous begonia, commonly called
wax begonia and easily grown from seed, that we need to focus on, as these are too-often overlooked plants that will multitask for homeowners.
Herbaceous annuals such as: Ageratum (Ageratum houstonlanum)
Wax Begonia (Begonia semperflorens) Coleus (Coleus species) Impatiens (Impatiens species) Lobelia (Lobelia erinus) Sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritima) Geranium (Pelargonium x hortorum) Petunia (Petunia x hybrida) Salvia (Salvia species) Marigold (Tagetes patula) Zinnia (Zinnia elegans) 2.
Schefflera,
wax begonia, snake plant, king of hearts, prayer plant (God help us), she added them all to her indoor arboretum.
For beautiful flowers that rabbits don't relish, try vinca,
wax begonia, annual geranium, blanket flower (Gaillardia) and iris.
To produce a
wax begonia plant in bloom for Mother's Day (May 10) under my growing regime requires 18 weeks from sowing, whereas a cucumber plant at proper transplanting size needs only two weeks from seeding to setting into the garden.
Cuttings from
wax begonias, impatiens, coleus, marigolds, geraniums and salvias are some annuals that clone easily this way.Chrysanthemums are perennials often treated as annuals and discarded at the end of the season.
