It was a
White-breasted Nuthatch. I was going to write 'it was of course...' but desisted as the autocorrect was so ham-fisted that it was only my addiction to Daily Telegraph cryptic crosswords that got me through.
Four of the bird species I detected, (Pileated Woodpecker, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Willow Flycatcher, and
White-breasted Nuthatch) were listed as vulnerable by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (Table 1).

White-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis, N = 48, [X.sup.2] = 11.6, P = 0.009), House Finch (N = 106, [X.sup.2] = 19.4, P < 0.001), American Goldfinch (N = 96, [X.sup.2] = 35.8, P < 0.001), and House Sparrow (N = 49, [X.sup.2] = 62.1, P < 0.001), had differences in the frequency of visits to a seed variety after adjusting to the seed variety being in a new position (Table 1, see Fig.
Species negatively associated with RDA 1 include flycatchers (e.g., Eastern Wood-pewee and Blue-gray Gnatcatcher), bark-gleaners (e.g., Brown Creeper and
White-breasted Nuthatch), and other common forest passerines (e.g., Summer Tanager, Tufted Titmouse, and American Goldfinch).
In descending order, these were dark-eyed junco (Junco hyemalis), pygmy nuthatch (Sitta pygmaea), western bluebird (Sialia mexicana),
white-breasted nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis), mountain chickadee (Poecile gambeli), ruby-crowned kinglet (Regulus calendula), Steller's jay (Cyanocitta stelleri), hairy woodpecker (Picoides villosus), and brown creeper (Certhia americana).
Through the Fort Lewis Fish and Wildlife Program Nest Box Project, which began in 1982, 205 nesting boxes are provided on post for western bluebirds, bats, purple martins, wood ducks, American kestrel and
white-breasted nuthatch.
There are precise illustrations of a great blue heron, pileated and red-bellied woodpeckers, a snowy owl, the brilliant black and orange of a Baltimore oriole, a
white-breasted nuthatch, a Lincoln's sparrow, a barred owl, a couple of shearwaters and a Cooper's hawk.
In contrast, 7 species (Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Tufted Titmouse,
White-breasted Nuthatch, Downy Woodpecker, Northern Cardinal, Hooded Warbler) were at least 1 standard deviation below their historical mean.
The red-breasted nuthatch (left) is the most colorful one and the
white-breasted nuthatch (below) is the biggest.
