widescreen

A projection screen wider than the standard aspect ratio (proportion) of 4 ft high by 5 ft wide, usually 3 ft x 7 ft. Several patented systems: Cinemascope uses a standard proportion frame on 35mm film but uses an anamorphic lens to squeeze the picture onto the negative and again to correct it when projected from the print; Panavision uses double width (70mm) film, either in the camera and projection or for camera only, and then squeezes the image onto a 35mm print for projection; Todd A-O uses 65mm film; Vistavision uses 35mm film, but run sideways through the camera.
