Grindstone

1. A flat circular stone generally about two inches thick and twenty inches in diameter made of naturally occurring sandstone. It could be mounted in a frame and rotated to sharpen bladed tools such as axes and scythes. The sandstone used commercially was carefully chosen to have the right grit and a minimum of hard spots that would cause the stone to wear unevenly.
2. Like the one just described and an axle mounted on a frame and fitted with a handle and/or a foot treadle to rotate the stone.
