The histologic diagnosis of pituitary adenomas classifies tumors as acidophilic, basophilic, and chromophobic using conventional stains; acidophilic adenomas were said to be associated with acromegaly or gigantism, basophilic adenomas were thought to be the cause of Cushing disease, and chromophobic tumors were considered to be nonfunctioning from the endocrine perspective.
