Being an action painter and sparing in his use of colour, a conventional alignment of his canvases might have been a bit wearisome--and he tended to avoid this himself.
In his 1952 article "The American Action Painters," Harold Rosenberg described the canvas of American action painters as an "arena in which to act," in the process promoting the artist to the role of pseudo-actor.
The second shows modern art's most famous action painter, Jackson Pollock, kneeling on the floor of his studio dribbling paint.
