macrophage  (mkr-fj)
Any of various large white blood cells that play an essential immunologic role in vertebrates and some lower organisms by eliminating cellular debris and particulate antigens, including bacteria, through phagocytosis. Macrophages develop from circulating monocytes that migrate from the blood into tissues throughout the body, especially the spleen, liver, lymph nodes, lungs, brain, and connective tissue. Thus, we propose that the compounds isolated from Heliotropium ovalifolium may prove to be good scaffolds for compounds with anti-inflammatory potential that are effecting via interference with the ability of the activated macrophage in inflammatory conditions.
Tissues from Groups B and C had considerable numbers of infiltrating activated macrophages, indicative of inflammation, whereas animals in Group A had few detectable infiltrating macrophages.
The book also addresses key issues that have arisen in the field in recent years, such as the physiological roles of hepatocytes, sinusoidal lining cells, activated macrophages (Kupffer cells), cholangiocytes, and stellate cells, and their modulation of the T cells, natural killer cells, and NKT cells.
